Ponferrada, the capital of Bierzo is a city full of life which have been increasing during the 20th century until nowadays.
It is the economic and cultural engine of Bierzo and the second city of the province, and an unbeatable place from where you can meet the beautiful region.
In the small historical centre we recommend you to start in Avenida del Castillo, at the level of Plaza del Temple, next to the castle, because in a few steps you will find the little church of San Andrés dated in the 17th century. View of the Ponferrada Castle of Templar origin.
If you come back to the plaza and go through the Gil y Carrasco road, you will pass in front of the Casa de los Escudos, where has set up the Museo de la Radio. At the end of the road is located the turism office, and from there you only have to ascend a few metres before arrive to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Encina, a Renaissance temple which guards the patron saint of the city, de la Encina virgin.
